Before you start development on your website, make sure you have these things planned out and ready to go. A small business website is sometimes the first point of contact customers have with your business. So you have to make sure it is attractive, informative and easy to navigate. Contrary to popular belief, a website isn’t an expensive luxury or a frivolous endeavour — it’s an affordable, basic tool that every business needs.

Without further ado, here are the 6 things every small business website needs

1. A domain name that matches your business

It wouldn’t make much sense if our website was called MASK Bakery when we provide digital solutions, would it? The same goes for your business! Sometimes you might have to shell out some extra cash to buy the exact domain name that matches your business but make sure you look into different TLDs (the .com, .au, .org you get at the end of a website) and you could find a workaround to it.

2. Affordable hosting solutions

We covered this in an earlier blog of ours, (read about how much each aspect of a website costs) but make sure you ask your developer or do some research to find out how much server space your website would need. You don’t want to be left helpless if your website gets a surge of users one day and the website crashes.

3. SEO optimized content on your website

This is an easy, cheap way to get more traffic to your website. You can create SEO optimized content by yourself, you don’t always need a professional for this part. When your website is optimized for SEO, your website is more visible on the search engine results page. For more information on SEO, check out our SEO for beginners blog.

4. About Us Page

Tell your audience more about your company, how it began, what problem you hope to solve and more about your team!

5. FAQ Page

This is a great feature to have if you sell products online. People usually have a lot of questions when it comes to shipping and delivery, not to mention refunds. Compile a list of commonly asked questions and come up with a generic answer to include. The amount of customer service emails you’ll have to deal with will drop as well, giving you some more time to tackle other issues or upgrades to your business!

6. Live Chat

You can use chatbot tools to create automated flows to integrate a chatbot into your website. These chatbots will be equipped to handle customer queries and guide them to the right page or team members that can handle the problem. We’d recommend ManyChat because they have a free version of their tool and the basic functionalities are more than enough to create a well-rounded flow.

We hope you consider these things when you are building a new business website or refreshing your old one. If you’re on a budget, we’d advise you to come up with website content yourself and just provide it to your developer/agency. We’ve also included free tools or cheap alternatives whenever possible to keep costs low for your business.
